So I came home to find this:
[A moment of silence for my so-recently-new toy…]
He mangled the thing pretty good, but amazingly it still turns on, albeit with a busted touch-screen.
However, Nintendo’s customer service provides a happy(ish) ending to this story. Here’s a rough version of my call to Nintendo:
- Nintendo:
- Nintendo of America! This is –-, how may I help you?
- Me:
- Yeah… um, my puppy ate my DSlite.
- Nintendo:
- [Smothered laughter] oh no!
- Me:
- Yeah, it got pretty mangled. I’m wondering if there’s any way I can get it fixed for less than buying a new one.
- Nintendo:
- Well, that depends — how mangled is it?
- Me:
- Well, it still turns on but the bottom screen is busted, there are teeth marks all over the plastic, and…
- Nintendo:
- Yeah, that doesn’t sound like it’s fixable.
- Me:
- No, I didn’t think so.
- Nintendo:
- You said it’s a DSlite? You mean you just got it, huh?
- Me:
- Yeah, just about a month ago.
- Nintendo:
Wow, that’s terrible!.
Usually we charge full price for a replacement, but since you just got it let me see if there’s anything I can do…
- Me:
- Thanks so much!
- Nintendo:
[Sounds of typing…]
So it looks like the best I can do is to charge you $50 to repair it, how does that sound?
- Me:
- !
Major props to Nintendo’s customer service. I don’t know many companies that would replace a unit that’s been eaten by a dog for around 1/3 of the sticker price. That rocks.
Update:
Switched to a better photo taken by my co-worker, Phil.
Comments:
Man, that sucks...and yet, that's awesome. That's really kick ass of Nintendo to do that.
I know -- I totally didn't expect them to be so cool about it. They've certainly made a fanboy of me now :)
Crate training. Works wonders for dogs, and for your stuff.
heh! So far I only have flowers for the Nintendo support desk. I once ordered something via Internet, since I'm from Québec, they do not accept transactions through Internet (yeah I know it's stupid) so they called me to say it wasn't possible. I wasn't fast enough so my answering machine got the message... empty... Then, 2 minutes after, I got the second phone, this time, it was a girl with a perfect French accent telling me they were sorry, that I could do the order through phone. That's where I understood they actually hung up and asked a French person to call me since my answering message was in French.
That's service for me, they show respect to their clients and it shows.
My dog has eaten three cell phones to date so I know your pain, luckily the first two were right around the renewal period so we waited it out to get them cheap, but the last one was not even close.
I wish the phone companies customer service was as good as Nintendo's, we had to buy a new phone. Sure enough to say, we now have the insurance on the phones.
i was expecting them to send you a new one + nintendogs or something.
My 10 gb ipod stopped functioning within the warrenty period. I stopped by the genuis center at a applestore and they replaced it ON THE SPOT.
Now that is service.
When the Gamecube first came out my friends and I played the thing for almost 10 hours straight when it died! So I called up Nintendo, obviously it was a manufacturor defect and they agreed and said that they would dispatch fedex to pick it up and pay the shipping.
Much to our suprise there was a knock on the door 10 minutes later and it was Fedex! The next day I received a new gamecube that was overnighted before the received the broken unit.
@Courtney
"Crate training. Works wonders for dogs, and for your stuff."
Heh, it's funny you should say that; I had a crate trained German Shepard who chewed up my little brother's iPod shuffle to the point where it didn't work at all. Funny thing was, she brought it back to her crate first, and then chewed it up. (It was found in the crate when she was done...)
I have to admit that nintendo rocks when it comes to phone support, I called them last week cause I bought Mario 64 DS, and I remember reading that my DS should have came with a thumb stick so it emulates the analong stick on the 64, well I called nintendo and he said it does not come with the lite and that he charges $5 for it. I said Cool, ill pay for it since the game is very hard to play with a stylus, so He asked for my name, and I tell him, and he asked me if I was the Daryl from Las Vegas.. And I said yes I am, but that is like 10 years old! Then he said oh since your such a long time customer I am going to send it to you free, and give you a free subscription to nintendo power! I was truly amazied!
Customer service like that makes me love nintendo and truly hate microsoft.
Long live nintendo!
Wow, nintendo service rocks. I hope they keep it that way too. Before dell service was supposed to be good, but then they cheaped out to increase profit margins, and now support sucks. I phoned nintendo for support, and I was on hold for a total of 2 seconds, and they helped me fix the problem right away.
nice! $50 to repair it, eh? so are they actually going to repair it, or replace it? it would be kind of funny if they just replaced/fixed the touchscreen ;)
I just want to say that it was really cool of you to blog on this. Usually we only hear the bad side of customer service these days but it's nice to hear of someone getting it right.
Makes me proud to have invested all that time in Mike Tyson's Punchout so many years ago.
$50 is their standard price for fixing anything wrong with the unit thats less than a year old. If it blew up in pieces it would be the same price.
The nintendogs were howling after that!
You should have bought the Nintedo DS at Best Buy, along with the two year warranty... It would be a lot easier than having to wait, AND pay an additional 50 dollars.
Is your puppy okay???
I just got a DS Lite today... don't think my cat is too interested in it. Awesome of Ninendo to hook you up like that.
J -- yes, he's fine (thanks for asking!)
Wow, your customer service is WAY better than mine. I'm caught in a hassle of one right now actually:
- My top DS Lite screen has a weird bug where there's two duplicate lines after each other. Makes all pixels garbled basically, and games that use the entire screen estate are annoying. It was a subtle issue that I didn't notice until about two weeks after purchase.
- I go to the shop and ask how I get it fixed. He tells me "no way" and will only fix/trade it if he gets "a written letter" by Bergsala (Nintendo importer in my country).
- So I email Bergsala and ask about the warranty. I get a nasty email back where the guy is implying I made it the problem myself. I question his judgement and ask again where I can get it fixed.
- He then went off from vacation and I had to call *another* guy at Bergsala who said that I should take my DS Lite with me, go to the shop and call him up there at the store.
- So I go there and do that and then, guess what? They're out of DS Lites! So I bike home in the rain without a replacement and still a broken DS Lite.
Sorry for ranting out like this. Just had to vent about this a little...Nice to see that they've got better support in other countries though! :D
Thats amazing.. wow nintendo rocks!
That's pretty gnarly looking chewtoy. I'm guessing your dog tried to play the DS and then got frustrated due to his lack of thumbs.
I feel pretty lucky that my dog learned so quickly what she was allowed to chew. I think the worst of it was a slobbery but otherwise intact sneaker, and a somewhat damaged corner on our floor molding.
I guess your dog has an eye for quality :) My dogs have never done anything that bad, but once I came home to find my xbox live headset in pieces which I left on the floor the previous night. Good to know you will be getting a replacement!
Why is it that, as the comments go on, i see less and less of it? anything to the left of this the star below.

Dogs don't belong indoors, mmmk. Brownie points for Nintendo (y)
Yeah, I just got a DS Lite because my puppy chewed up my old DS.
Wow Nick that sucks :(
The importer seems to be lookin out for himself then, you might want to ask him for the number of the nintendo branch he orders from so your problem can be heard directly by Nintendo. It sucks to be in your shoes but it is also hard to be middle man to problems like this.
Next time you call the importer, try to get on his side, tell him you know it isn't his fault and you don't want him to replace it, you want Nintendo to replace it and ask him for the number of his sales rep.
You need a "Nintendog" instead of a real dog, nintendog won't eat your DS Lite...
This is fake, Nintendo want to sell more DS Lites!
C'mon, post a pic of the dog.
Animals + electronics = bad. My housemate got mad at my other housemate because B's rabbits chewed on A's iPod cable.
oh.$50 a little expensive. If i were you .i will not repair it .
I've always been impressed with Nintendo's customer support, I hope it stays that way too. Last time I phoned them up they picked up in about 5 seconds, compared to other helpline's I've used that take about 30 mins to an hour to get a reply, that's pretty good.
when i ordered my ds Wi-Fi USB dongle contraption, it was delivered the next day! I was expecting it to take atleast 1 week. They are very good. Customer service is very important for a company like Nintendo, if they treat people bad they will lose customers. So good on them for treating people correctly! Kudos alround
they should consider a case made of the konk material used for dog toys. might be harder to chew through and add a bit to the shock obsorbtion.
Nintendo is awesome like that. They gave me 3 free issues of NP because I didn't receive the last two month's issues.
I am a jerk, and I like going to other people's sites and leaving stupid comments. Incidentally, I've never been laid.

heh dogs can do murder on on electronics. but my little sis is even worse. she uses pictochat to just draw and crap and pretty much destroyed my touch screen by scratching it too hard to "color" in the pictures she drew
@ nick
just try to send a mail directly to Nintendo (info@nintendo.com) explaining your problem.
Yeah I had a simmilar occurance when i got a new puppy, however my list was bigger, yet damage was more minimal.
1. He destroyed my cell phone... to pieces
2. He ate my stylus
3. He demolished my wave bird... and 2 other controllers
Puppies... if they weren't so adorable... I'd have a lot more electronics.
Yea,i'm soo sowwy,i'm getting mine at Christmas,i'm getting a pink one with nintendo dogs and dog trainer and i'm looking for more.

AWESOME! My DS (not ds lite) broke a bit. I dropped it on concrete. The piece that holds it together came off. They don't have that problem on dslite because they don't have that part. All i did was put sticky glue on it. It happened today. I just put the glue on and hoping it works. I was gonna call nintendo if the glue doesn't work. And I don't wanna depart my nintendogs, either. Hurrah Nintendo!
yer i have a dog 2 and i got a nintendo sp and my dog eat it so i no how it feels lol
mate, thats a cool photo! ive had a few problems with DSLites... my first had some dead pixels on the top screen, only a few, but in just the wrong places... one quick trim to HMV later, and a new DS (woo!) trouble is, the new one is starting to screw up! the touchscreen has a mind of its own and randomly acts like i picked something. no amount of calibration helps. hmm... i just emailed nintendo. maybe they can help somehow?

ARRRGGGH my calibration is driving my insane!! :-(
I tried calibrating it but I have the same problem
as the other people above me, if i click on a letter
it presses the button 2-3 squares to the left..
My screen is really out. On the pictochat keyboard, when I click y it comes up with r. When I try to calibrate the screen it takes AGES!
I was doing it for 10 minutes and NOTHING...
I am giving in and just going to leave the calibration programme on and come back every now and then and doing a bit. Then HOPEFULLY it will fix it!
Hey nick and anynone else with that same problem. I had a problem with my touch screen but living in New Zealand = no Nintendo - only Nintendo of Australia (they don't have any contact links on their site!!!). Anyway, my touch screen kept changing map views when I was playing Mario Kart with my brother. My dad took the battery out and put it in the hot water cupboard for about 2 hours to dry (I thought blowing into the DS mic could have done something) and then it worked fine again. You guys might like to try that. Oh and I found out (I have original DS) that even though I like original DS better, DS Lite sucks compared to what everyone said. The power lights are on the computer chip underneath and is magnefied through plastic which is what you see. Well that plastic corner broke off on my friend's DS Lite. So we were looking on YouTube for a video showing a way of assembling a DS Lite after taking it apart so as you could put a new shell on. And we found loads of people with the same problem - the corner with the lights had broken off and thescreen moves aroud. Too hard to play when it's like that too... Anyway, hope this mega long message clears some stuff up for you guys. Wish Nintendo of New Zealand existed. Sounds like they have great service though. I have to email Nintendo of America with my questions though and they don't know answers to release dates and such. The least Nintendo of Australia could do (even if they can't replace or let us pruchase stuff in New Zealand) is give us a contact email...
by any chance could you tell me the number because my ds lite broke and i can't find the number that gamestop gave me
hey so sorry i just got myn yesterday yay!!!!!!! SO HAPPY my dogs if they put a poor on it i think i would kill them and there would be no point for them to live lol. so thats just a hint dont touch it!!!!!
frakydeakydeaky it is on the nintendo website if u go on there and go to conatcts it will come up or you can send them an email but the phone is much better
i wish ipayed 50 for mine when it got broken
i have the same problem w/ da calibrating thing. soooo i noticed that the middle part of my touchscreen doesnt work anymore and most of my games use the touch and now i cant even LOAD ONE!!!!!!!!!!
i wanna just sleep and wake up finding a new DS next to me. ooooo that'll be soooo cool :)
I have had same problem as above my calibration takes aaaaaggggggggeeeeeeesssssss I tried calibrating it on a long car journey and after two hours!! still nothing but it used o be my sis's and she said it does work eventually
My ds light just got busted it broke it to 2 pices but it still works the thing that inhances the light broke off and that was holding but the wire is just holding it now does ANYONE i mean ANYONE know where it can get fixed or where i could get a new one if i trun mine in to somewhere and i can get it for free or where i can get it fixed to make it look brand-new oh i would like some help with pokemon preal and diamond just some cheats that help me get fruther
Yeah I have the same exact problem with my DS, the touch screen calibration just goes on and on and on. Does anyone know how to reset the DS? Maybe that could fix it.
I just got a gift from oversea, it is a ds lite but in foreign laugauge, anyone know how to convert it to english version?
haha,your dog ate it
YEAH HAHA
THIS IS NOT FUNNY
It's good that you're getting yours replaced.
I've got a crack on my top screen (original DS) and a gray blob in it, which makes it almost impossible to play NSMB. (Mario Kart isn't as bad)
Hi I just read your story and I was wondering if there were any negative things about the ds lite because I am thinking about buying one for my self pretty soon... Any suggestions?
Ye I'm having the same calibrating problem with my lite and it is REALLY BUGGING ME. I haven't tried the tooth brush thing as I'm scared of breaking it.
Your dog chewed it??? WHOA and it still works! ay :P B)
I have been doing loads of calibrating lately. I looked on the internet about calibrating my DS and there was a video on how to fix it and it was as simple as going to the calibrate menu. Ha. Duh everyone knows that. Also the man doing it called the little DS at the bottom of the menu screen a "filing cabinet" HA lol. I have tried the toothbrush thing once. I then took out ma games and expansion pack and calibrated a few times and it worked ha ha. And all of the test dots work!! Awesome!! So if you're having problems have a go with the toothbrush thing, (but be VERY VERY careful) then take your games out and try again.
Also can I just ask... ...has anyone had this problem with a original DS. Mine is a lite and I had an old DS and had no problems. Maybe the DS lite has a calibrating glitch... Duh Duh DDUUHH!!
yes I want to kill it again. When on pictochat it was going mad.... GRR Just been trying my Sis's old origianal ds and the calibration workd perfectly hey presto. GRRRR
WOW! I Thought they would send somthing like a new DS and somthing else probaly Nintendo Dogs! Wow! I can't beilive your puppy ate your new DS! And now, you're probally famous! Wow! How can I do that?
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha My dog ate min to i was sad so sad my mom gav me a new on
